Where Carlycopia began

It all started the day before attending a Thanksgiving potluck. I was dropping off recycling when a glint of silver material caught my eye.

With excitement I pulled the material out and was ecstatic when I found it was large enough to be worn as a cloak, already shaped like a hood at the top. Instantly I had an idea. I grabbed a hollow foam cube beside it and hurried back to my apartment to start building.

The next day I assembled and dressed in all the parts and pieces — Ta-da! I was a silver human-sized burrito-looking cornucopia, the foam cube now strapped to by body – abundantly full of greenery, fruits, and vegetables. My favorite part being a chorus of carrots with cute drawn-on smiles. Adorned with a sash that read “Give Thanks!” I skipped around to the various groups attending the potluck, eliciting just what I had hoped — the reactions were the best. Laughter and smiles, double-takes, full-on confusion — overall, delightful connection.

At the end of this charade, a friend looked at me and declared, “You’re not a cornucopia, you’re a Carlycopia!”

Nailed it. Carlycopia was born and it stuck.

Carlycopia exists to provide people with a feeling — when something handcrafted and wonderfully weird shows up and makes the whole room brighter. Every piece starts with inspiration: a sketch, a material, a theme — and turns into something you can hold, gift, wear, inhabit, or hang from your ceiling.
